British forces led by Royal Marine Edward Nicolls, establish a base at Prospect Bluff to forge alliances with Native Americans against the United States.

The Royal Marines recruited former American and Spanish slaves into a unit of Colonial Marines who garrison the fort during the War of 1812.


After the end of the war many Colonial Marines remained, US forces attacked the fort on 27 July 1816 and eventually destroyed it.


Surviving Colonial Marines resisted the US forces across Florida over the following decade.
