Taking of the Canton Forts

” On the morning of October 24th [1857], Sir Michael landed additional Marines to aid detachments which were already ashore in Canton from the Sibylle and Encounter for the protection of the factory and he himself went in the Coromandel to join the Barracouta off Macao Fort.

Upon a preconcerted signal, the Bird's Nest Fort mounting 35 guns, and a small fort,

which being opposite the city, might have annoyed the factory, were seized without resistance.

The Shameen Forts, at the head of the Macao passage were subsequently treated in the same way; and all the guns and ammunition in them were rendered unserviceable or were destroyed.
