HMS Hermes is retired


INS Viraat former HMS Hermes is retired, she holds the Guinness record for being the oldest serving warship.

INS Viraat is a Centaur-Class Aircraft Carrier and served in the Royal Navy as HMS Hermes, which was the flag ship of Royal Navy during the Falklands Campaign of 1982 was decommissioned from active duty in 1985. The Indian Navy purchased the vessel in April 1986, retired this year she has spent 29 years under the Indian flag and 27 years with the Royal Navy. The ship was laid down by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness during World War II as HMS Elephant. Construction was suspended in 1945 but work was resumed in 1952 to clear the slipway and the hull was launched on 16 February 1953. The vessel remained unfinished until 1957, when she entered service on 18 November 1959 as HMS Hermes My brother and I had a ships tour once, in about 1980 after my Father was presented a BEM on board.
