Recently whilst driving in the area I came across the Royal Marine Pub in Lyne near Cobham, I had to stop and find out why a pub named after the Marines was in the middle of Army country! The pub dates back to 1847 and was originally 2 separate cottages. It's later name is in recognition of the fact that the Royal Marines took part in the Great Camp of 1853. At the suggestion of Prince Albert ahead of the Crimean War, the Great Camp gathered over 8,000 men, 1,500 horses, and 24 artillery...

Lt Peter Haydon from 41 CDO RM was 19 years old and had served for less than six months in the Royal Marines when he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) Originally recommendation for an Military Cross (M.C.) for actions at Salerno, after returning wounded provided witness statements of the action in which Lt.
